Job vacancies at Roshni Sheffield Asian Women’s Resource Centre

Roshni offers a range of bi-lingual and culturally appropriate services to women from Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian backgrounds, to empower the women with information, guidance and support to achieve their full potential. We currently have two vacancies at Roshni:

1. Bi-lingual Empowerment Worker (Urdu/Punjabi/Hindi)

Salary: £23,646 (pro rata £15,338)
Hours: 24 per week

Purpose and scope of the job: Roshni is launching an innovative new project, Empowerment Circle, offering vulnerable South Asian women short-term advocacy support alongside a long-term self-advocacy programme of training, providing one to one and group support to motivate women to step up, move out of their comfort zones and reach their full potential. The Empowerment Worker will provide empathy, encouragement, one to one advocacy and facilitation of group sessions to increase women’s confidence, skills and resilience.

The post-holder will have a genuine desire to make a difference, and experience of working with marginalised women in providing advocacy or welfare rights advice; in addition, we are looking for experience in supporting volunteers and developing and facilitating group sessions in a community setting.

Knowledge of one of the following community language is required: Urdu or Punjabi or Hindi.

2. Bi-lingual English Basic Literacy and English Conversation Class Tutor (Urdu/Punjabi/Hindi)

Salary: £23,646 (pro rata £6,391)
Hours: 10 per week

Purpose and scope of the job: To be responsible for teaching and coordinating a number of community-based classes to improve English language skills for South Asian women for whom English is a second language; this includes a basic English literacy class and a number of English conversation classes, run with assistance from volunteers. The English teaching is provided at Roshni as part of our women’s Empowerment Circle, with the ultimate aim for marginalised women to overcome adversity and to thrive. The post holder needs to understand the cultural barriers women experience to learning, maintaining attendance and to stay motivated, to create individual goals for women to challenge and stretch them.

The post-holder will need to be a talented individual who can contribute to the creation of a basic literacy programme for women lacking early formal education. The post-holder will receive training and support from Faith Action to run ‘Creative English’ Conversation classes. Formal qualification in ESOL teaching is desirable but not essential, as long as you can demonstrate relevant knowledge, experience and qualities required for this position.
