JOB TITLE:                              Kitchen Supervisor

RESPONSIBLE TO:               Roshni Kitchen Project Coordinator

HOURS:                                               20 hours per week (spread over  3-5 days)

CONTRACT PERIOD:       12 months ( 3 month probationary period)

Salary:                                      £28,610 pro rata

Introduction: 

Roshni is a community organisation, which empowers women of South Asian backgrounds, breaking barriers of language and culture. Roshni Kitchen is is our latest venture, offering healthy and delicious South Asian cuisine, inspired by Ayurveda. Our café will provide training opportunities to South Asian women who have excellent skills in traditional cooking but lack formal qualifications. We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised bilingual female kitchen supervisor to oversee and work alongside the cooks and the cooking assistants to provide tasty foods to satisfied customers.

Job Summary:

To be responsible for the menu planning, preparation, presentation and service of food, to appeal to a wide range of customers. Working with the kitchen project coordinator to ensure the smooth running of the café.

Job Description:

 

  • Ensuring that all food items are prepared and served to a high standard
  • Plan shopping for the ingredients for the week/month, ensuring that the café does not run out of essentials
  • Ordering and shopping for kitchen materials and ingredients based on the menu and market demand
  • Maintaining adequate inventory levels and conducting weekly inventories
  • Working with cafe management staff to create menu items, pricing and establishing portion sizes of each meal
  • Introduce new and exciting recipes to the menu, in line with the café’s mission to provide healthy versions of South Asian food
  • Supervising food preparation in the kitchen and ensuring that customers are satisfied
  • Interest and expertise in cooking menu items
  • Communicating with the cooks and other kitchen staff to ensure that tasks are assigned for maximum efficiency
  • Maintaining clean working environment and orderly environment at all times
  • Maintaining high standards of customer care and ensuring that customers are satisfied
  • Scheduling shifts by business hours, days and occasions
  • Overseeing the training of employees to ensure the safe operation of kitchen equipment and utensils and the proper handling of heavy items and hazardous materials.
  • To work with volunteers and trainees as required to ensure an efficient, cafe and catering service is maintained.
  • To undertake any other duties or training as required that are commensurate with the general level of responsibility for this post
  • To undertake all duties in line with Roshni’s policies and procedures, particularly in relation to the safeguarding, health and safety, anti-oppressive practices and adherence to the confidentiality policy.
  • To undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade and purpose of the job as may be determined between the post holder and management. 

ROSHNI KITCHEN SUPERVISOR PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential: 

  • Competent level of English spoken and written
  • Good level of numeracy
  • Ability, at a competent level, to use Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel worksheets, Outlook, emails and the internet
  • At least some experience of project management and people management
  • Interest in cooking and nutrition; You should have a passion for cooking and a can do, will do attitude.
  • Enthusiasm to develop your own skills and knowledge and of those around you
  • Knowledge and experience of cooking South Asian food
  • Attention to detail, and ability to plan and organise
  • Understand preparing high-volume food and meal production, without compromising on taste and quality
  • Ensure appealing plate presentation and attention to detail to ensure consistent, high standards
  • Adaptability to change and willingness to embrace new ideas and processes
  • Ability to work unsupervised and deliver quality work 
  • Positive and approachable manner
  • Being multi-skilled and flexible having the ability to go the extra mile and strive for success
  • Fluent in at least one South Asian community language (Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and/or Bengali)
  • Awareness of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) and chemical safety
  • Knowledge of technical food safety, allergen awareness and control
  • Experience of kitchen equipment
  • Knowledge of and commitment to good equalities and diversity practices and the ability to apply awareness of diversity issues to all aspects of work.

Desirable

you will have:

  • Good passes at GSCE level or equivalent experience
  • Level 2 in Food hygiene
  • Knowledge of Ayurvedic cooking principles
  • Experience of working with a diverse team, volunteers or people with varying abilities
  • Passionate about tackling food waste, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability, renewable, re-useable outcomes.
