Walking Towards Wellbeing: Empowering Women Through Nature
Walking Towards Wellbeing: Empowering Women Through Nature
At Roshni, we believe that even the simplest acts—like walking—can lead to powerful transformations. From January to July 2025, in partnership with Heeley Trust, we led a series of six countryside walks for South Asian women facing personal challenges, isolation, and mental distress.
With every step, we saw women reconnect with nature, with each other, and most importantly—with themselves.
Our group visited beautiful and peaceful locations such as Grindleford, Burbage Edge, and Rivelin Valley. For many, it was their first time in these natural spaces.
Each walk was more than just exercise—it was a safe space for healing, friendship, and cultural connection. A certified walk leader from Heeley Trust ensured that all routes were well-planned and safe, while Roshni’s dedicated support worker offered language and emotional support, helping participants feel welcomed and included from the very start.
To nourish body and soul, women brought delicious food to share, complemented by wholesome snacks from Roshni Kitchen, our social enterprise café. These moments of sharing helped create a sense of belonging that many participants hadn’t felt in a long time.
What the Women Told Us
“When I’m at home, I feel panicked and depressed. But today, after this walk, I feel totally different.”
“I live in a refuge and had never been to the countryside before. It was so refreshing.”
“I usually just watch TV because I don’t have anyone to go out with. This group has changed that.”
“Please continue these walks—they’re good for body and mind!”
